Learning Challenge Curriculum –This term, the Learning Challenge for our key stage is ‘What makes York Great?’ We will start off by looking at York’s chocolate history and we will learn at Joseph Rowentree and discuss why the Chocolate Factory is important to York. We will do a learning through Science week focusing on the season of Autumn, whilst discussing what is great about our school and local area! We will then learn about the railway history of York. We will be finding out what the children already know and what questions they want to learn about York Station and think about why the station is important to our city.

Reading – Children take part in guided reading every day, where they focus on their reading fluency. In these sessions the children also complete a number of challenges which include phonics games and spelling activities. We look at our class novel twice a week where we take part in ‘reading for real’ as a whole team. We enjoy spending time discussing the themes of the story, digging deeper into the text and drawing out inferences and opinions about what is happening.

Home reading books are changed on Monday.

Please return your book bag to school by Friday. The Bug Club reading books will be changed every two weeks, whilst the ‘Free reading book’ will be changed every week.  We really encourage reading at home every day and celebrate home reading by handing out certificates on a weekly basis. Reading is part of your child’s homework and they have a challenge to read at least five times a week. Please do spend time listening to your child read and discussing their reading with them to help them improve their understanding and fluency.  We would be grateful if you could then write a note and sign their planner to show they have read to you.
