Creative curriculum- This term, the Learning Challenge for Year 3 and 4 is ‘Under my feet.’ We will look at the areas surrounding us in our community and the services that are provided in the local area. We will work with local charities that support Acomb and York looking at how we can make a difference to people’s lives. The children will have a chance to explore some of the things which are relevant in the news today as well as talk to outside agencies about what they are doing and how they can help. We will be encouraging the children to discuss and debate issues. The work we will be doing is linked to our class text Mr Stink – a story about an unlikely friendship made within the community.
Reading – Children take part in guided reading and reading activity session every day. We usually read together as a class as well as giving the children time to listen to others read, question and be questioned about what they have read and how the author has written in a certain way.
Home reading books. Reading is part of your child’s homework and they have a challenge to read at least five times a week. Please, would you listen to your child read so that you can ask him/her comprehension questions and help them improve their understanding and fluency? We would be grateful if you could then write a note in their planner to say they have read to you. Please ensure reading records are returned to school everyday. This will help us ensure they are reading either at home or in school everyday on top of their guided reading sessions.
Spellings – Spelling lists will be handed out each half term, these will be retested at the start of the next half term, in place of weekly spellings as these will be taught and practised in school.
Useful websites to help your child:
Lots and lots of games to look through that use a range of Maths and Literacy skills.
A range of reading comprehensions to develop both fluency and comprehension skills.
If you have any queries about anything that is happening in class, please pop in to see us. Hopefully, we will be able to help you then or arrange a time when we can discuss any issues with you that will need longer time.
