During the week with have the following activities…
Learning Challenge Curriculum – This term, the Learning Challenge for our key stage is ‘What makes York Great’? We are currently exploring important places in York, significant people, how chocolate came to York and the railway history of York. We will be finding out what the children already know and what questions they want to learn about our amazing city.
Reading – Children take part in guided reading every day, where they focus on their reading fluency. In these sessions the children also complete a number of challenges which include phonics games and spelling activities. We look at our class text three a week where we take part in ‘reading for real’ discussions as a whole team. We enjoy spending time discussing the themes of the story, digging deeper into the text and drawing out inferences and opinions about what is happening.
Home reading books are to be brought back into school on a Friday and new books will be sent home on a Monday. Two books will be sent home, one Bug Club book which mirrors what your child is reading in class and one free reader which is their reading for pleasure book. We really encourage reading at home every day and celebrate home reading by handing out certificates on a weekly basis. Reading is part of your child’s homework and they have a challenge to read at least five times a week. Please do spend time listening to your child read and discussing their reading with them to help them improve their understanding and fluency. We would be grateful if you could then write a note and sign their planner to show they have read to you.
If you have any queries about anything that is happening in class, please pop in to see us. Hopefully, we will be able to help you then or arrange a time when we can discuss any issues with you that will need longer time.
